ONE person died on the spot while five others sustained serious injuries when a vehicle they were travelling in burst its rear tyre, veered off the road and overturned before landing on its wheels along the Bulawayo-Harare Road, police have said.The five were rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) where they are battling for their lives.
In an interview, acting Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya said the accident occurred at 11am on Tuesday at the 79km peg between Bulawayo and Gweru. He said the vehicle, a Toyota Noah registration number ABO 2457, which is beige in colour, was going to Bulawayo with nine passengers on board.
“We received a report of a fatal accident that occurred on 13 August along the Bulawayo-Gweru Road. When the vehicle reached the 79km peg it burst its rear tyre, veered off the road and overturned before landing on its wheels facing the direction where it was coming from,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.
“There were nine passengers on board. A 41-year-old person was killed while five others including the driver Mr John Mapfumo (32) of Mzilikazi in Bulawayo survived with injuries,” he said.
Asst Insp Ngwenya said the injured were initially taken to Shangani Hospital before being transferred to UBH. He said the body was taken to Shangani Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
