THREE men who allegedly robbed Saverite Supermarket in Magwegwe North suburb on Saturday evening and got away with $339 at gunpoint were not so lucky as they were arrested two days later.Police confirmed the incident and arrest of the three yesterday.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said the three men were in police custody assisting with investigations.
“I can confirm that the suspects who pounced on Saverite Supermarket in Magwegwe North at about 7pm on Saturday and got away with $339 have been arrested,” he said.

“I cannot give details now as the three are assisting us with investigations.”
When a Chronicle news team visited the supermarket on Wednesday, Mr Abel Sagombetu, a shop attendant who witnessed the robbery, said he was inside when two men entered the premises pretending to be customers. He said the third remained on guard near the shop entrance and ordered everyone in the shop to lie down at gunpoint.

Mr Sagombetu said he crawled out of the shop unnoticed and fled to a neighbouring supermarket where they phoned the police.
“While the armed robbers were busy ordering customers and shop workers to lie down, I managed to crawl towards the back door where I escaped to call for help from a neighbouring shop,” he said.

Another shop attendant, Ms Nothando Sibanda, said one of the robbers produced a knife and forced a merchandiser to lie down.
“I heard the shop merchandiser screaming for help as I lay on the floor. There was nothing we could have done because the men were armed,” said Ms Sibanda.

“We did not see what happened thereafter and we only recovered (from shock) when the police arrived but it was late because the robbers had already left.”

Insp Moyo urged shop owners to be alert during closing hours adding that armed robbers targeted businesses during closing time.
