The officer commanding police traffic in Bulawayo, Superintendent Henry Mhlanga, confirmed the accident yesterday and said all passengers and the driver were seriously injured.
“I can confirm that we attended an accident where 18 people were injured and were rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals. One person has since died and three were taken to the Intensive Care Unit as they are in a
critical condition,” said Supt Mhlanga.
A witness said the accident happened when the driver tried to avoid hitting a pedestrian and the vehicle then veered off the road.
“The driver was trying to avoid hitting a pedestrian when he veered off the road. The front wheel came off in the process, resulting in it landing on the bridge.
“Police attended the scene 10 minutes after the accident and an ambulance was called, which rushed the commuters to hospital,” he said.
Supt Mhlanga urged kombi drivers to be careful when driving and to adhere to road signs all the time.
On Wednesday 32 people died from around the country while 247 others were injured in 509 road accidents recorded since Thursday last week.
Police said they had impounded 1 116 unroadworthy vehicles countrywide, as people congest roads while travelling for the festive season.
