admincharacter — dissociated from the world the cinema goer inhabits — he has an “acquired taste”. And I have not acquired it.
The film “Thirty Minutes or Less” is directed by Ruben Fleischer, known best for “Zombieland,” which gave fair warning to film enthusiasts what to expect from this California-born devotee.
Taking Hollywood’s willingness, the current film will, I’m sure, one day be pointed out as a step along the road to perdition. Or — just as likely — the road, which will lead to the return of prudery.
The title is taken from the job which Nick (Jasse Eisenberg) carries out — not on a bicycle as I used to do it but on a motor-car.
He delivers pizza, which is free if not delivered within a half-hour. An arrangement which, on the surface, makes no sense since the pizza parlour can never know how far away is any given address.
The addresses in this film are all in Grand Rapids, Michigan, city of a quarter million inhabitants in the state, which is often limned, as prototypically American.
In delivering this round delicacy of Italian origin, Nick comes across Dwayne and Travis, who have decided to use whatever means necessary to raise US$100 000 which will enable them membership in a criminal syndicate.
As is fully evident from beginning to end, it is all for laughs; even the scenes of sexual nudity. Coming from at least two generations past, will I ever be able to take the thunder vicious language in stride?
The plot involves encasing Nick within an explosive device, from which he cannot divest himself without setting it off, until he has carried out the nefarious schemes of
the aforementioned Dwayne and Travis.
These latter two, not related to each other, but only friends, are, surprising for a Hollywood film, such look-alike, that they are often indistinguishable. All in all, a film to be recommended only to one who is prepared to take whatever is thrown at him.
