‘ONE OF THE BIGGEST THOROUGHBRED HORSE RACES IN AFRICA’

THE Mashonaland Turf Club (MTC) have described the OK Grand Challenge race as one of the biggest thoroughbred horse races in Africa.

The 2024 US$1million OK Grand Challenge Promotion, which was launched in Harare in April, comes to a grand climax at Borrowdale Park Racecourse today.

The country’s biggest retail promotion was launched under the theme “OK Grand Challenge, Where the Nation Shops and Saves.”

The main race today is set to get a total of US$ 80 000, from last year’s US$70 000, from last year while the rest of the purse goes to the supporting races.

Speaking during the acceptance session of the field for the 36th edition of the OK Grand Challenge race, MTC chairman, Scott Buchan, praised the country’s biggest retail chain store for its unwavering support to horse racing in the country.

“The OK group has once again been unfaltering in its support and partnership with the Mashonaland Turf Club, US$ 90 000 is a large injection into our industry.

“It is not only one of the largest sports events in Zimbabwe but it is one of the largest thoroughbred horse racing events on the continent.

“But it is more than that, it is a live example of growth, development and commitment,” said Buchan.

The MTC revealed that this year’s edition of the OK Grand Challenge race has a competitive field.

“Horse racing in Zimbabwe, like all of our national sports, has been through some challenging times. Over the last four to five years, our horse numbers have been difficult to increase and, as result, the quality of the horse has naturally declined.

“But, for the first time this year in many years, we have a very competitive field lining up for the OK Grand Challenge,” said Buchan.

With a field of 15 horses, a mixture of youth, experience and skill, people will in for a treat when the main race explodes into life.

“We have an incredible mixture of youth, experience and skill and the pinnacle of any professional sport is always quantified on all three tenets,” said Buchan.
