Opposition party hails ED reforms

Mutare Bureau
The African Democrats (TAD), which is one of the numerous parties contesting the 2018 harmonised elections, has commended the new political administration led by President Mnangagwa for striving to level the electoral playing field.

TAD was the 54th political party to register for the forthcoming polls and will contest in 40 constituencies.

Its leader, Mr Marco Machona, will also make a bid for the highest office in the land.

In a recent interview, Mr Machona criticised the former political administration for disregarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens.

“I think there has been a vast improvement in the political environment in this country and maybe that is why we have numerous political parties being formed and showing interest to participate in the electoral processes of this country.

“In the past, I could not come back home and walk freely. I could sneak into the country to see family and relatives. So many people were in a similar situation. Freely expressing your political views was a crime, but the new dispensation has somehow managed to open up (the country’s) political space.

“Yes, there are areas that might need improvement, but it is encouraging to note that there has been a significant improvement. Issues related to the voters’ roll need to be addressed and I hope the meeting that we will have with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) will address that,” he said.

Mr Machona’s party was formed in 2016.
