ORGANIC foods were identified as a key performance enhancer at a wellness programme that was attended by nutritionists and psychologists in the capital recently.

Sports science, especially nutrition has become critical amongst sports personalities, like those who perform at the highest stage.

A local expert, Kathy Chikowe of Second Chance Trust has urged sports people to trust organic foods as these enhance performance.

Fruits and vegetables as well as small grain products like millet and brown rice are some of the organic foods recommended for sport people.

“Wellness programmes are very key, especially in terms of living and staying healthy.

“Organic foods are very important for sports people,” said Chikowe.

The wellness program was organized by renowned suppliers of organic foods Zimbo Storo.

“Sports people need to eat healthy, they also need to be emotionally stable. If sports people have problems at home, they also need psychosocial support and counselling.

“Eating healthy food is eating food which does not have too many additives like what we are seeing nowadays.

“So it’s of paramount importance that we link what we eat and what we take into our mind.

“Remember, the human being is very complicated. It comprises the soul, the body, and the spirit. So these three, if there is any discord there will be chaos in the human life,” said Chikowe. Zimbo Storo’s chief executive officer, David Zimbira, also explained the importance of organic foods.

“The food that we take for granted here in Zimbabwe, like madora, mufushwa are the most sought after out there in the diaspora.

“We didn’t eat these foods because we didn’t know their nutritional value. We thought they were a poverty type of food.

“But with the knowledge that we have acquired over years we now know the importance of organic foods.”
