The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has roped in the police to conduct investigations into what the parastatal believes is a coordinated arson attack on its properties.
On Monday, multiple passenger coaches were destroyed when a fire broke out at the Bulawayo mechanical workshop. No deaths or injuries were recorded. According to the NRZ, three passenger coaches were burnt to shells in Harare on Wednesday.
“The NRZ has over the course of the week experienced a spate of fire outbreaks at its premises, which appear to be coordinated arson attacks. The first fire broke out on Monday at the NRZ mechanical workshops in Bulawayo, destroying 44 decommissioned passenger coaches. The second incident took place on Wednesday at the shunters complex in Harare, where three coaches have been torched,” said NRZ board chairman Advocate Mike Madiro.
NRZ suspects foul play in both incidents. “We strongly suspect that these incidents are a result of foul play. The NRZ and the Zimbabwe Republic Police have since opened investigations into the matter and no stone will be left unturned. We would like to warn the saboteurs that the long arm of the law will catch up with them,” said Adv. Madiro.
