The Gweru community is feverishly anticipating the much-awaited musical show headlined by one of the country’s biggest musicians, Winky D, on Saturday night at Gweru Sports Club.
Excitement has been building as the days draw closer to the event. Two weeks ago, the Gaffa himself confirmed in a 17-second video that he will touch down in Gweru on the 21st of September. The video, which circulated on social media, also highlighted some of the main supporting acts.
“Gweru, I want you to remember, on the 21st of September, it’s called ‘Fill Up Gweru Sports Club.’ Come in your numbers and make your G.O.A.T proud. Winky D, HKD, Voltz JT, Kae Chaps, and don’t forget the Vigilance Band, because I don’t play tracks,” Winky D said rhythmically in the video. This message further ignited the excitement that began over a month ago when the first poster for the event was released.
Traditionally, the Gaffa has performed in Gweru annually, often during the summer season at the Midlands Hotel in the heart of the CBD. During those days, Winky D, also known for his captivating stage outfits, would cover his long dreadlocks with a matching wool hat. However, the lockdowns altered this tradition, as music shows were suspended for a protracted period. On June 25th, 2022, when the lockdown restrictions were partially lifted, Winky D performed for a short time within the curfew hours. Unfortunately, the performance left fans wanting more, as it didn’t last long enough to satisfy the Gweru crowd.
“It was my first time witnessing Winky D perform live, and it was out of curiosity. It was a good performance that lasted only a few minutes before the police called it off,” said Godwin Gungunyani, a music fan from Gweru. “This time, the lockdowns are over, and I’ve already bought my ticket. I’m just waiting for the day with restless anticipation,” he added.
Another Winky D groupie, Tecla Manhivi, shared her excitement: “I think I’m Winky D’s biggest fan. It’s been a long time since I attended his shows, but I watch every performance on YouTube. I believe this one will be the craziest show I’ve ever attended, especially with the lineup of top-notch musicians.”
Dancehall chanter Freeman, along with Voltz JT and Kae Chaps, representing “masalad,” will also share the stage with Winky D. Voltz JT, known for his hit “War Vets,” will perform his latest album in Gweru for the first time. Local dancehall singer UNKAT, formerly known as Region, and DJ Crocs will be among the supporting acts.
Show promoter Partson Chimbodza, of Chipaz Promotions, confirmed that everything is set and encouraged the Gweru community to come out in their numbers. “Everything is now set, and all the artists on the poster have confirmed their attendance. They’ve promised to give a stellar performance and I want to encourage all music lovers to come in large numbers for this rare show featuring the country’s top artists,” Chimbodza said
