Out of the Rabble: A compelling read

I-universe on March 20, this year “Out of the Rabble: Ending the Global Economic Crisis by Understanding the Zimbabwean Experience” straddles across four continents as it discusses problems facing today’s global economy and offering explanations and solutions for not only Zimbabwe but relates Zimbabwe’s microcosmic economic experiences to the global economic crisis with revealing and refreshing insights.

“Out of the Rabble” is a distillation of a wide range of economic issues, into digestible concepts that leave the reader with new insights into the causes of the economic challenges. The book offers a historic first in Chiweza’s new thesis of a five factor economic environment in which markets complete the five factors he says are needed for sustained economic development.

Based on his firsthand experience of living in China during the years 1988-1992, Chiweza argues that far from the pretence of the free markets doctrine, all industrialising nations owe their development to monopolistic markets with for example, China having had total ban on imports for much of her early development stages. He argues that markets along with other factors provide an environment necessary for human industrial development culminating in global competitiveness as was with the China case.

Through this thesis he gives credible new explanations to the mystery around the global financial crisis where the ‘perfect’ economies of the US, Europe and Japan have been falling to the imperfect and previously ridiculed  economies of BRICS countries.

Understanding the global phenomenon is key to rescuing the Zimbabwean economy which has reeled under nearly two decades of economic decline. According to Chiweza, the 1990s economic structural adjustment programmes were an antithesis that actually disassembled the vibrant structure of the economy, rendering it dysfunctional in a situation where the primary, secondary, manufacturing and commerce components are competing against each other to the detriment of national corporate development goals.

Chiweza argues that no meaningful development can take place without being preceded by a new structural realignment to the structure that preceded the 1990s’ antithesis.
Judging by readers reviews received already, the book is a treasure for MBAs thought leaders, political and business leaders. Chiweza concludes by stating that the current five factors of production; land, capital, labour, entrepreneurship and markets must be elevated to national security status as they form the basis for economic livelihood for any nation on earth.

Chiweza who earned a Masters’ degree in Strategic Management with the University of derby has 36 years of working experience 18 of which were spent in the military at senior management level, including a diplomatic experience in China  and another 18 in the private sector.
