Outgoing Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Commissioner-General Major General (Retired) Paradzai Zimondi on Tuesday paid tribute to the President, Government officials and prison officers for their support during his tenure.
Comm-Gen Zimondi, who joined ZPCS in 1997 and will be retiring on October 30, 2020, said this while bidding farewell to ZPCS Harare Metropolitan Province.
He is on leave pending his retirement.
“I would like to humbly and sincerely register my profound appreciation for the steadfast support that I received during my tenure of office from His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Ministers in different portfolios, service chiefs and the nation at large, which has seen ZPCS being recognised as an important stakeholder in the security of the nation,” Comm-Gen Zimondi said.
He said a number of reforms have been achieved by the ZPCS, which among others include changing the correctional system inherited from the colonial era.
“A number of reforms have been achieved by the ZPCS and the most critical one that the nation is set to enjoy for a long period of time to come is that of changing the punitive correctional system inherited from our colonisers to the current rehabilitative one.”
Comm-Gen Zimondi implored officers to show their profound support to his successor, Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu.
“May I also request for support to be extended to the incoming leadership. I also pledge my continued allegiance to the Government of Zimbabwe and availability when required for any national duty.”
In his remarks, Officer Commanding Harare Metropolitan Province Senior Assistant Commissioner Alvord Gapare commended Comm-Gen Zimondi for his hard work and for guiding the ZPCS through times of great change.
“You have laid a very strong foundation for us and therefore we can all face the future with confidence.
“You are very good at encouraging initiative and cultivating team spirit among the people.
“In short, during your tenure of office, you just concentrated on getting the basics right as you successfully steered the service through times of great change.”
Speaking on behalf of all officers, ZPCS assistant public relations officer Ms Omega Mudzinganyama thanked Comm-Gen Zimondi for the support he gave them during his term of office.
