MORE than 2 000 congregants have gathered at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre, where Jehovah’s Witnesses are hosting their Regional Conventions in the Matabeleland region.
Running under the theme “Pure Worship”, the convention started on Friday, with several other conventions taking place across Matabeleland — one in Binga and another in Hwange running concurrently with the Bulawayo gathering. Two conventions to be held exclusively in Ndebele are coming soon, while the one in Gwanda is still to be held. The Beitbridge convention, conducted exclusively in Venda, has already been completed.

In an interview, Jehovah’s Witnesses regional spokesperson, Mr Witness Gama, said the theme of this year’s convention highlights the way of life Christians should follow.
He said the convention is centred on the life of Jesus Christ, who should be the role model for all Christians as they strive to live in a manner pleasing to God.
“We are happy that, today, more than 2 000 people are gathered here, and they are benefiting from this regional convention,” said Mr Gama.

“One thing we want to highlight from this event is that it helps us to be responsible citizens, have good behaviour in the community, and respect our leaders and the authority.
“Jesus Christ is our role model, and also the major highlight for this regional convention is the use of technology, where we have videos that showcase the life of Jesus Christ and the word he shared, which has a great meaning in our lives today.”
Meanwhile, Jehovah’s Witnesses have adopted technological methods of disseminating the Word of God, with the church using online platforms that allow many people to follow proceedings remotely.

Mr Gama said about 65 attendees of the ongoing event were following the convention through the live streaming platform.
“For a community to be responsible, people should behave the way Jesus was behaving, and this is the reason why we have this convention — so that we equip people,” said Mr Gama.
He added that the church gathers three times a year, and they are looking forward to their final convention, which will be held at the end of November in Bulawayo.
