More than 20 people were injured this morning when a commuter omnibus traveling from Ziko to Harare’s central business district burst a front tire and veered off Seke Road near Chinhamo Service Station.

The injured were rushed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. About seven people sustained serious injuries.

Daniel Chayirikira (43), one of the injured, was traveling with his son, Panashe Chayirikira (25). The two escaped with minor injuries.

“Tinodira doro pasi, kutenda vadzimu vedu tingadai tisina kurarama uye kubuda saizvozvi, (We thank our ancestors for protecting us, otherwise we wouldn’t have survived this accident,” said Daniel soon after receiving treatment.

One of the injured people argued with paramedics at the scene, refusing to be taken to the hospital. Her argument was based on her religious beliefs.

“Ndiri wechitendero hama dzangu dzikazonzwa kuti mandiendesa kuchipatara hazvifambe zvakanaka. Ndiendesei kuBudiriro, ndiko kwatinoshandirwa, (My religious beliefs do not allow me to go to the hospital, and my relatives should not see me there. Please take me to Budirio so that l can get spiritual help,” she was heard arguing with the paramedics.

At the time of this report, the police had not yet recorded statements from the injured at the hospital.
