HE took charge of the Warriors at the AFCON finals and now Malawi want Callisto “Mana” Pasuwa to do the same with their Flames.
After his remarkable success story with Nyasa Big Bullets, in which hehas dominated the league since his arrival, Pasuwa is now a wanted man.
The Football Association of Malawi appear to be laying the groundwork for him to become their national team coach.
Pressure has been rising in Malawi after the Flames leaked six goals, and didn’t score, in two back-to-back AFCON qualifiers against the Pharaohs of Egypt.
They were beaten 0-2 in Egypt before suffering a 0-4 homehumiliation last week.
Fans jeered at FAM president Walter Nyamilandu during the thrashing at the hands of Mohamed Salah and his counterparts.
“During the match, Football Association of Malawi president Walter Nyamilandu was taunted by a section of fans baying for his blood (andasking him) to step down,” wrote the Marawi Post.
“During post match interviews, Flames coach (Mario Marinica), whose football philosophy has been criticised since he controversially took over from Meck Mwase, said he would not quit.
“He called for patience in what is becoming afutile mission to rekindle the Flames.”
He said:
“We had five shots on target and they had five. They scored four goals and we didn’t score a goal. I am not a quitter and will fight on.
“We had good patches today and played good football despite not scoring.”
Malawi will now face Ethiopia away and Guinea at home.
The association announced on Saturday that it will not renew Romanian coach Marinica’s contract and that he will proceed on leave for the remainder of his one-year contract.
His contract ends at the end of this month.
Pasuwa has now been recommended for the job Marinica is leaving behind.
According to reports from Malawi, the Nyasa Bullets coach was recommended to be the interim coach.
“FAM are waiting for official communication from its technical committeeon the resolutions.
“They are saying by this weekend the executive will decide on the recommendation to hire Pasuwa as interim head coach with Patrick Mabedi and Alex Ngwira as his assistants,” said a source in Malawi.
Pasuwa was one of the advisors for the Flames at the last AFCON tournament.
