More than two million Pfumvudza/Intwasa plots have been prepared in Mashonaland East Province as households embrace climate-proofed conservative agriculture.
The province is targeting 600 000 households and has surpassed its goal of 1,8 million plots.
To receive Pfumvudza inputs, individuals must prepare at least three plots; however, due to the popularity of the programme, some households are managing more than 10 plots.
Mashonaland East launched the 2025/26 Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme in Ward 8, Hwedza District, where farmers received inputs, with calls for productive use.
The event, held at Mr and Mrs Misilani’s homestead, was officiated by Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Advocate Itayi Ndudzo, with government officials and farmers in attendance.
“This initiative is not just a programme; it is a pivotal moment in our journey towards sustainable agriculture and food security in Zimbabwe,” stated Advocate Ndudzo.
“As we gather to commemorate this significant launch, I want to express my gratitude to the leadership of President Mnangagwa. His commitment to climate-proofed inputs and sustainable agricultural practices has paved the way to address challenges posed by climate change.
“Through the Presidential Climate-Proofed Input Programme, we are empowered with input packages tailored to meet the needs of farmers.
“This initiative will enable us to cultivate resilient crops that can withstand unpredictable climate patterns,” Advocate Ndudzo mentioned.
He stated that through climate-proofed agriculture, Zimbabwe is assured of food security, starting at the household level.
“This input programme aims to reach three million beneficiaries in rural communities. This is not merely a number; each beneficiary represents a family and a community that will benefit from increased agricultural productivity.
“We are not just planting seeds; we are planting hope. Food security is not just a goal; it is a fundamental right for every Zimbabwean household. Through this initiative, we are ensuring that no one goes hungry and that every child has the nourishment needed to thrive.
“As we embark on this journey, we must recognise the importance of sustainable agricultural practices.
“We must collectively adopt techniques that enhance productivity while protecting our environment. Our land is our greatest asset, and we have a responsibility to nurture it for future generations.
“Sustainable practices such as conservation agriculture, crop rotation, and soil health management are vital for food security in the long term.”
Advocate Ndudzo commended the government for its commitment to empowering rural communities and for the agricultural support provided to farmers. He stated that such empowerment and support will ensure Zimbabwe achieves upper middle-income status by 2030.
“As we look towards Vision 2030, we envision a prosperous Zimbabwe where rural empowerment is the cornerstone of development.
“The Pfumvudza programme embodies that commitment. It is a testament to the belief that smallholder farmers are the backbone of the economy.
“They are the unsung heroes who toil to feed the nation, and it is our duty to support them. The government’s commitment to smallholder farmers is evident in the resources and support being provided.
“We are not just offering inputs; we are providing knowledge, training, and access to markets. We must ensure that farmers are equipped with the skills needed to succeed. Knowledge empowers farmers to make informed decisions that lead to increased productivity and profitability.”
The provincial launch was held at Mr and Mrs Misilani’s homestead, with beneficiaries of the programme testifying to the transformation brought about by Pfumvudza/Intwasa on their livelihoods.
“I joined the programme in 2022 with two plots. Though we did not receive good rains, we managed to get enough food. In 2023, we did three plots and again, we did not receive good rains, yet still, we harvested enough.
“In 2024, we decided to do eleven plots; nine were under maize, and we got a bumper harvest. Pfumvudza helped us significantly. We now have a home, and our family is happy. Pfumvudza brought joy to my family.
“This season, we prepared 14 plots and we want to thank President Mnangagwa for the support. Ever since we joined the programme, we have never starved,” Mr Misilani said.
Ms Marian Ruvimbo said she also joined the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme in 2022 and has never looked back.
“I am food secure and my family will always be happy. Today we are receiving inputs and we are grateful. Thank you, President Mnangagwa, for the support. I have prepared three plots and I am ready to plant,” she said.
