A SENIOR Zimbabwe Revenue Authority official based in Plumtree knocked down a 24-year-old man and killed him on the spot while trying to overtake another vehicle along the Plumtree-Mphoengs Road.
Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Thabani Mkhwananzi confirmed the incident which occurred on Sunday evening.
He identified the deceased as Zweleni Dube.
Sgt Mkwananzi said Dube was walking by the road side with his two friends when he was hit by the car.
He said Ntelezi Dube, 51, who is employed as an assistant accountant at the Plumtree Border Post Zimra offices, was driving a black Toyota Gaia when he lost control and hit Dube, killing him instantly.
The accident occurred at the 1km peg along Plumtree-Mphoengs Road.
Sgt Mkhwananzi said Dube sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.
“I can confirm that there was an incident involving a 24-year-old man who was run over by a car. The driver of the vehicle was travelling towards Mphoengs and so was Dube who was walking on the right side of the road in the company of two other pedestrians.
“The driver who was overtaking another vehicle hit Dube killing him on the spot while his two other companions escaped without injuries,” said Sgt Mkhwananzi.
Witnesses said Dube was walking in the lane of oncoming traffic while his companions were on the side of the road.
In another incident, a 24-year-old builder from Plumtree was fined $200 fine for knocking down and injuring a cyclist.
Zandleni Moyo was convicted of culpable homicide by Plumtree magistrate Gideon Ruvetsa.
He was ordered to pay $200 or spend 30 days in prison in case of default.
Moyo, who is a holder of a learner’s licence, failed to give way to the cyclist, Xolani Ncube, at an intersection.
Prosecuting, Clemence Shawarira said Moyo hit the cyclist on April 18.
“On 18 April around 6PM Moyo was driving a Toyota Runx under the supervision of Peter Sibanda who is licensed. Upon reaching an intersection, he failed to give way to the cyclist who was heading towards another direction along the same road.
“As a result, the vehicle hit the cyclist who sustained severe injuries. The accident was attributed to the motorist’s failure to give way to oncoming traffic and to keep a proper outlook on the road,” he said.
Moyo told the court that he knocked down the cyclist accidentally as he did not see him approaching.
