A HARARE-BASED detective sergeant was robbed at knifepoint in the early hours of March 27 at  MaSteps bus stop in Southlea Park.

Elias Tivirima (45) and Ability Sibanda (26) appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing robbery charges.

Prosecutor Ms Polite Chikiwa told the court that the complainant, Detective Sergeant Takunda Karize, who is stationed at CID Property in Harare, had parked motor vehicle at the bus stop around 1am while waiting for a relative coming from South Africa.

The court heard that the two accused, acting in common purpose and armed with knives, stones and metal objects, allegedly emerged from a nearby bush and launched the attack.

They allegedly smashed the vehicle’s windows before threatening the complainant with a knife, which they placed on his throat, demanding cash and valuables.

Fearing for his life, Detective Sergeant Karize surrendered his property.

The stolen items include three cellphones — a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, a Samsung Galaxy A20, and a Samsung Galaxy Note 20; a wallet containing a police identity card; and US$150 in cash.

After the incident, the complainant made a report at ZRP Southlea Park, leading to the arrest of the two suspects.

Tivirima and Sibanda were remanded in custody and are expected to return to court tomorrow for a bail hearing.
