AS Zimbabwe joins other SADC countries on a day of action against the Western-imposed sanctions today, Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Zimbabwe Dr Tamer Almassri and the Southern Africa University Debate Championship (SAUDC) have called on the international community to unconditionally lift the sanctions.
In fact, Ambassador Almassri rallied the world to impose sanctions on Israel instead of Zimbabwe, accusing Tel Aviv of genocide, apartheid and systematic violations of international law.
In a statement yesterday ahead of the SADC Anti-Sanctions Day today, Ambassador Almassri said Palestine stands in full solidarity with Zimbabwe and SADC in condemning the illegal sanctions imposed by some Western powers at the turn of the millennium.
“The Palestinian people have a deep understanding of the devastating impact of illegal sanctions, having faced occupation, apartheid and genocide policies for close to a century under Israeli rule,” he said.
Ambassador Almassri said Western-imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe were unjustified and harmful to its economic recovery. He said international law was being applied selectively to protect global powers and their allies.
“True adherence to international law requires sanctions to be applied against states that are clear violators, such as the apartheid state of Israel. For over seven decades, Israel has occupied the Holy Land of Palestine committing genocide in Gaza and the West Bank while the world remains silent.
