demonstration comes a day after thousands of Palestinians across the West Bank took part in a general strike by transport workers as protests spurred by a sudden rise in fuel prices entered their second week.
Fayyad has been a key target of demonstrators who are particularly angry about the spiralling cost of fuel, which has gone up from US$1,50 to US$2,00 per litre in the last two months alone.
He was expected to address the growing unrest after a morning meeting of his cabinet.
The workers staged a mass walk-out with between 1 000 and 1 500 participating in a sit-in called for by the government workers’ union.
“Our demand is an immediate reduction in the cost of fuel,” union head Bassam Zakarneh told the demonstrators. — AFP.
