There was a stampede at Jah Prayzah’s show in Mutare on Saturday after organisers of the event announced that the venue was full to capacity and turned away some fans. By 11pm the show had been completely sold out. Police with dogs and soldiers had to displace people who were trying to force their way into the venue. The show, which was the musician’s Mutare launch of his album “Kumbumura Mhute” was held at Pick and Save.
Esau Mupfumi, organiser of the event, said they were forced to let other people go because the facilities at the venue only accommodate about 1 500 people.
“We had no option but to let other patrons go home because we don’t have enough facilities for an extended number,” said Mupfumi. Inside the venue people were packed with a number of fist-fights erupting during the show due to suspected theft cases.
Alcohol beverages ran out before midnight, forcing music lovers to dance to the music without beer all night.
“We had stocked a lot of crates of different brands and this is shocking. The situation went out of hand because we could not order more beverages at night,” he said.
Jah Prayzah was at his best on the night as he staged an energetic show.
Songs from the new album that include “Makanika”, “Kumaricho” and the title track became popular on the night as fans sang along to the tracks.
He kept revellers on their feet when his band mimicked some army drills.
Speaking about the event, the musician said he was surprised to see such a response in Mutare. “This is my first time to get such a response and it has come at a time when some people were saying a lot about my album.
“It gives me courage and confidence that this is my best release,” he said.
He rubbished reports that he rushed to release an album, saying this is one of the projects he took his time to release.
“I am happy that with this latest album people are beginning to appreciate my music, which is encouraging,” he said.
