ZIMBABWE Prisons and Correctional Service athletics coach Kelvin Pangiso is confident of his athletes to compete at the Commissioner General’s Goodwill Trust Fund half marathon on Sunday at Chikurubi Damview Resort.
The event is being organised by ZPCS Harare province, and the half marathon is the main race of the day.
There is also a 10km race on offer for seniors as well as for veterans, masters and juniors, and 10km wheelchair race.
The Commissioner General’s Goodwill Trust Fund is aimed at assisting children and spouses of deceased correctional services officers and other vulnerable members.
Registration for the event is $15.
Pangiso said they have a strong team in place for the event that is expected to feature participants from all walks of life.
“For 21km, women, we have Caroline Mhandu. She is unstoppable. We are expecting a win… We have Febby Chabhanga, it’s her first half marathon.
“10km women we have Maryjoy Mudyiravanji, she is an 800m and 1500m runner but she is also good in 10km, we expect a top three finish.
“For men’s 10km, we have Mathew Masarirevhu and Samuel Mtombeni, they are both good. I know they are going to compete against guys like Welling Varevi, if they don’t win it will be more about experience.
“We have Jonathan Chinyoka for 21km although he is now specialising in marathon and ultra-marathon. We are fielding him because it’s our race.
“We have Tanaka Chikore, a new kid on the block but he is good. I am sure it’s his first half marathon.
“Then we have Precious Makaza, our veteran and Patience Garauzive,” said Pangiso.
