THE Progressive and Patriotic Citizens of Zimbabwe has backed proposed constitutional amendments under national consideration and said the reforms will enhance governance stability, strengthen democratic institutions and support long-term national development.
In a statement, PAPCOZ chairperson Mr Patson Murimoga said the organisation believes constitutions should evolve in line with a country’s political maturity and development aspirations.
“Our position is guided by history, pragmatism and a firm belief that constitutions are living instruments meant to evolve in line with a nation’s political maturity, development aspirations and unique socio-cultural realities,” he said.
Mr Murimoga said Zimbabwe’s constitutional development should reflect the country’s historical experience and sovereignty.
“Zimbabwe’s constitutional journey must never be frozen in time, nor outsourced to foreign ideological templates that do not reflect our lived experience as a liberated African nation,” he said.
Mr Murimoga said PAPCOZ supports the proposal to extend the parliamentary and presidential terms from five to seven years and described the move as a strategic governance reform aimed at improving policy continuity and development planning.
