ZIMBABWE’S athletes, expected to represent the country at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, got into camp in Harare on Monday.
The Games are running from August 24 to September 5.
However, one of the athletes, Albert Sigele, who posted a qualifying time during the World Para Athletics Grand Prix, is likely to miss out on the Games, due to classification complications.
Earlier indications were that his classification has been successful.
But, yesterday, Team Zimbabwe chef de mission for the Tokyo Games, Ignatius Vambe, said there were some complications.
Zimbabwe had been waiting for confirmation, for a number of wildcards, and Vambe said they have been turned down.
“The team is now in a bio-bubble at Cresta Lodge but, unfortunately, for us, all our wildcards were turned down, at the last-minute,’’ said Vambe.
“They had hoped that, after some other countries had earlier indicated they would not be sending teams due to Covid-19, which would have given us a chance.
“So, last week, they informed us that, unfortunately, we were no longer going to get the wildcards, since the slots had been filled in.
