Parliament has called for the expeditious reburial of liberation war heroes who were buried in shallow graves across the country during the liberation war.
During Tuesday’s debate, Honourable Marko Raidza – Mberengwa North Member of Parliament – raised a motion to put pressure on Government to finance the process.
He said there were many unmarked graves in his constituency.
“We call on this House to assist in disseminating information to the masses of this country, which will lead to the identification of graves of our freedom fighters,” he said.
“We call on this House to urge the Executive to set up committees countrywide to ensure that no late freedom fighter fails to get a decent burial, as this resonates well with the selfless sacrifice they made to liberate this country. “
Norton legislator Temba Mliswa supported the motion, saying the scope of the reburials should be expanded beyond the country`s borders.
“All the children who died in foreign land, like at Chimoio and in Zambia, should be repatriated back home so that their remains can be re-buried here. In addition, the children who died in areas such as Mberengwa and so on, these areas should be preserved and honoured as places where freedom fighters died and were buried,” he said.
