The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Industry and Commerce has met with industry players and retailers over their operations in light of the closures of some supermarket and wholesale branches across the country.
The committee is chaired by Zaka South legislator, Cde Clemence Chiduwa.
In his contribution, the president of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers, Dr Denford Mutashu said the formal retailers are facing unfair competition from the informal sector which does not pay some of the taxes they pay.
“The cost of doing business for the formal sector is high, with several cost centres they have to comply with that the informal sector doesn’t have to,” he said.
