Parliament of Zimbabwe’s Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development is today convening a key workshop in Kadoma aimed at examining the country’s energy minerals sector and its impact on the environment and communities.
The engagement, organised in partnership with ActionAid, is bringing together key stakeholders from Government, industry and civil society to deliberate on opportunities and challenges in the mining of energy minerals such as coal, lithium and uranium.
Participants have already started trickling in ahead of the deliberations, which are expected to draw policymakers, mining experts and environmental advocates keen to shape the future of Zimbabwe’s energy minerals sector.
The workshop is expected to focus on providing a comprehensive overview of the country’s energy minerals sector, unpacking the fiscal framework governing the industry and examining the environmental and social implications associated with mining activities.
Participants expected at the workshop include officials from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe and the Environment Management Agency.
Representatives from the mining industry and advocacy groups are also expected to take part in the discussions, including the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association.
Deliberations during the workshop will also focus on identifying potential markets for Zimbabwe’s energy minerals as well as strategies for value addition and beneficiation, as the country seeks to maximise benefits from its vast mineral resources.
