WHAT started as a hobby for Cadence Athletics Club director Kudzai Pasipanodya will see him make his first appearance at the 2022 Comrades Marathon in South Africa on Sunday.

Joining several top athletes like Mike Fokorani, Pasipanodya, who left the country for Durban yesterday, said he is looking forward to finish the race and come home with a medal.

“I am ready for my first-ever Comrades Marathon and I want to finish the race. It has always been my dream to take part in the Comrades Marathon and this year I am going to fulfill the dream.

“There are top athletes going there and being part of the race is good for endurance. “I cannot look much into the race but with the cut-off at 12 hours, I am targeting to cross the finish line in 10 hours and if it comes to worst in 11 hours so that I get a medal.

“As an ardent athlete I will give all my best as it also helps my athletes from Cadence Academy when I lead by example,” said Pasipanodya.

The athlete is not new to taking part in long-distance races as he also participated in the Kilimanjaro Race, Econet Victoria Falls Marathon as well as many other races locally.

“I have been training with some athletes within the academy at Shawasha Hills so I am ready for the race.

“It will be a tough race but my intention is to cross the finish line ahead of the cut-off time,” added Pasipanodya.

This year, the race is a down run, starting at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and finishing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

According to the race website, the distance is 89.885km.

Several Zimbabweans have entered the race and Fokorani is one of the leading local athletes who is set to compete in this tough event on Sunday.

Fokorani arrived in South Africa on Tuesday ahead of the race.
