HE walks around Mutare’s Central Business District with a cordless speaker strapped on his tummy. He holds a wireless microphone so firmly, chanting and singing along to whichever song coming out from his seemingly heavy speaker. He will be selling the latest local dramas and music CDs and he samples new productions to anyone willing to have a feel, with all the patience and tolerance. He just doesn’t stop talking.
Many have fallen in love with his comic character as well as his husky and booming voice that exudes excellent and unique style of presentation. His deep Manyika dialect is a marvel. They call it marketing, but Moto Kupisa, whose real name is Victor Musarurwa, calls it art. The Sakubva-born actor has featured in three drama series so far which are Upenyu Ivhiri, Crime in Action and the latest Hazvinei produced and released four months ago.
He features as a disciplined gardener on Hazvinei, a captivating local drama series that reveals the dangers of trusting people among other detrimental consequences of love and trust. In an interview, Moto Kupisa, said he hoped to take his artistic prowess to another level by venturing into comedies if resources permit.
“I used to watch a lot of dramas and movies until I decided to follow the same route (of acting). Marketing with some bit of humour can be beneficial and off late I have been moving around Mutare and other cities marketing our new movie, Hazvinei which I also feature as a gardener,” he said.
Although he loves and enjoys acting, Moto Kupisa, a father of one, has the obligation to put food on the table.
“Life in the art industry has not been rosy. Piracy still remains our major enemy. I am married and my family expects me to come back home with something despite piracy and other challenges and it has not been easy. I can travel around the country marketing these CDs, but support has not been forthcoming. We need stakeholders support at least by funding local productions,” said the 29-year-old talented actor.
