RENOWNED preacher, Pastor Haisa, says he had a very close relationship with the late Leonard Dembo, one of the greatest musicians to emerge from this country.
Pastor Haisa said the Chitekete hitmaker, and many other leading artists of that era, had clashes with their recording companies over what they felt were some raw deals.
“His music was about his surroundings, his life, for example, he composed Shiriyakangwara after recovering from his illness.
“I still remember, his recording company visited him wanting another album, while he was recovering. He fumed at them and ordered them to buy him a decent house because they had made riches from his previous albums.
“That was how the RTP Recording company built him a house in Belvedere.
“All this was in my eyes because we were close.
“I am the one who pulled Dembo by force from Madzibaba Nzira’s shrine and took him to a hospital.”
He said the remembers Kenneth Chigodora shedding tears after what realising he had lost a lot of money at his recording company, Gramma Records.
“Once upon a time, I came across the late Kenneth Chigodora in tears at the gate of his recording company.
“I asked him why he was in that state and he produced bank cheques that Gramma Records said were withdrawn by Chigodora’s manager at Gramme who had since quit the recording company.
“Chigodora said he did not know about this so-called manager who was working at Gramma Records.
“The only clever artist was Charles Charamba, I think after he was tipped by someone.”
