Patrons assault injiva over ‘free binge’

AN injiva got more than he had bargained for when he entered a bar in Inyathi and drank beer before attempting to leave without paying. Patrons at Maqaqeni Sports Bar were incensed by the 27-year-old South Africa-based Adam Ncube’s behaviour and two of them rained punches on him.

Two men have been dragged to court for assault following the incident.

Cornelius Dube, 35, and Mthokozisi Tshuma, 29, who are both employed at Waterwish Mine in Inyathi pleaded guilty to assault charges when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Steven Ndlovu on circuit at Inyathi magistrates’ court on Friday.

They were each fined $50 failure to which they will spend 30 days in prison.

The court heard that on Tuesday last week Ncube entered the bar and drank beer but left without paying much to the annoyance of the patrons.

Tshuma and Dube followed Ncube outside the bar where Dube held him by the hands while Tshuma assaulted him with fists.

The two thought they were helping the bar man discipline the injiva who they said was being disrespectful.

“The complainant was drinking beer at a bar and at around 1AM he was drunk as attempted to leave the bar. The barman approached him and said he should pay for the beer he drank and Ncube told him he was going to pay him later,” said Lungisani Dube while prosecuting.

The court heard Tshuma and Dube took it upon themselves to discipline Ncube.

“The barman told other patrons about Ncube’s failure to pay leading to Dube and Tshuma approaching him and assaulting him.

“Tshuma assaulted him with fists while other patrons watched. Ncube managed to make a report to the police the next day leading to the duo’s arrest,” the prosecutor said.
