The four players who will be leaving the Tigers this year are captain Antonia Sirpriano, Tarisai Musanda, Clever Dhliwayo and eighth man Mono Dhlamini and this means coach Garikai will retain 18 players from his current first-team squad in 2014.
Garikai said today’s match was “a special encounter” for them because this will be the last match for the four players who are leaving.
“We are looking forward to our game. This will be the last match for my four players who contributed a lot to the team. We will miss them.
“The match will always be memorable whether we win or lose it.
“The season has been good and I must say we did quite well in our fixtures despite some fixtures being cancelled and others being shifted.
“We had good season of rugby, especially at the Cottco Schools Rugby Festival where the Tigers’ performance was excellent. We also played some friendly matches and we went on a tour of South Africa and Namibia where we won six out of nine matches, so am proud of the Tigers,” Garikai said.
He also highlighted that his second team and other age-groups have played well this season.
Meanwhile, perennial rivals St George’s College and St John’s College clashed yesterday at St George’s College for their last season fixture of the Super 8 league. St John’s dedicated their last match to their late eighth men Nick Burnett who died in a car accident in Harare last week.
All members of the St John’s team were wearing the number eight jersey in memory of Burnett.
St John’s observed a moment of silence in remembrance of Burnett after the match.
St John’s assistant coach Max Madziva said his boys, who were beaten 41-11 by the Saints, played a very emotional match.
“We had a tough week as most of our boys are still coping with grief. Losing our eighth man (Burnett) has not been easy for the players but we said let’s just go for it and play our last fixture.
“We could have said we had a good season, but losing Burnett was bad and we are going to remember him,” said Madziva.
St John’s were the first to touch down and by half-time they were leading 8-5. But the game become tough for the grieved team in the second half where the Saints started scoring tries one after the other.
