adminA 70-member squad which was unveiled on Thursday will leave the country tomorrow for Namibia where they will lock horns with three of Namibia’s finest schoolboy rugby teams and third-ranked South African team in a five-day tournament before the Tigers proceed to South Africa.
Prince Edward School sports director and head coach of the Tigers, Mr Sebastian Garikai, said his squad was geared to fight for a sweet victory against their arch-rivals, the Namibians and will use the tournament as preps for the impending local schools rugby season.
“Usually, we use our tours to build strong teams that will participate in our local rugby season without much pressure.
“I’m also ready to conquer the Namibians and bring the cup back home banking on the talented youthful stars we have mobilised,” said Garikai.
The Tigers stepped up their pre-season preparations and they have since engaged in several playoff games at the just-ended Spar Sevens Rugby Tournament. The boys are coping very well from the long rugby season break and they finished the tournament as runners-up to Mbare Academy.
Tigers captain Morgan Vangue expressed optimism ahead of the tournament and vowed to use his experience in the Under-20 national team.
“Our performance so far is quite impressive. I have no doubt about that, all newly promoted young stars who will make their debut appearance for the Tigers in Namibia are looking impressive as well and I will definitely fine tune the squad using my experience from my Under-20 days,” he said.
It is also likely that the rugby teams will tour Namibia together with the school’s hockey team, but the hockey team and the Cubs will end their tour in Namibia as the
Tigers are the only team proceeding to Kwazulu Natal-Vryheid for another tournament.
Locally, the Tigers and the Cubs gained much respect from schools rugby fanatics with their longstanding contention with the Bulldogs of Churchill Boys High and reigning champions the Dragons of St George’s High.
Although PE Tigers finished in fourth place last season, the technical department and the players would not want to repeat the same mistake this year and will use the Namibian and South Africa tournament to polish up their skills.
Meanwhile, the Zim Toque Modified Car Festival will spring into action at Gateway High School next Saturday as the school fund-raises money for the impending school hockey tour that runs from March 31-April 10 in South Africa.
Dubbed the bass and shine, the competition will give individuals a platform to showcase their cars checked sound system and hoof, best interior and body work with the winner walking away with cash prize money after a random draw.
Zim Toque co-founder Daniel Mc’Customs Manhanga said the show has come out of age and was bigger and better this time around compared to the one held at Westgate Shopping Mall last December.

The motor sport is fast becoming a favorite sport for everyone in Zimbabwe and organizers of such events have not disappointed so far which is a positive beginning for the sport which is at its infancy level.
