Residents and motorists have welcomed the installation of traffic calming measures along Sam Nujoma Extension, which are meant to reduce the risk of road accidents on the recently dualised road.
The move will also ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
The installation comes after relevant authorities noticed that a number of accidents had occurred due to speeding following the official opening of the completed dual carriageway on Sam Nujoma Extension, which connects Nemakonde Way Junction to Harare Drive.
Motorists, who spoke to H-Metro yesterday, said the traffic calming measures were a welcome development.
“We appreciate that the Government is listening to our concerns as road users, a lot of accidents have been happening since the reopening of this road due to speeding and negligent driving,” said a motorist, Samuel Ncube.
“We hope that people will respect the gentle rumble strips and also take note of the general speed limit of urban areas.
“People are over speeding forgetting that the general speed limit for urban areas is 60km/hr.”
Ncube added that the speed humps had to be marked to ensure that they are visible to motorists.
“What the authorities need now is to mark the rumble strips to ensure that they are visible to motorists because as is now we only notice when we are close by that there are humps otherwise this is a welcome development.”
A resident Abigail Shamhu said:
“People are dying of reckless driving and the accidents that we have witnessed over the past few days have nothing to do with the contractor,” she said.
“Rules of the road are simple, speed limits are there for a reason, and people have to be responsible on these roads.
“People are now treating this newly rehabilitated road as a highway when it’s an urban area road, we have schools and before these rumble strips were installed, we were afraid of sending our kids to the shops because of the speeds that some drivers are moving with, hopefully, people will respect these strips,” added another resident.
