IN a pure act of mischief, a 38-year-old man from Plumtree was caught red-handed by his grandmother while peeping into her bedroom where she was sleeping naked.
This came to light when Reabetswe Ncube appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware facing two counts of malicious damage to property and threats to commit murder.
Ncube was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 15 August. Allegations against Ncube are that on 2 August 2024 at around 2am, he returned home drunk and demanded food from his grandmother, Rebecca Ngwenya.
The court heard that his grandmother directed him to the kitchen for food. When he returned, Ncube was reportedly complaining that the food was “too little”, leading to an argument between the two parties.
At the height of the misunderstanding, Ncube allegedly took a plank and broke two bedroom windowpanes where his grandmother was sleeping. Ncube then proceeded to the kitchen where he grabbed a pot containing food and smashed it against the wall.
The court further heard that on 4 August, Ncube returned home again drunk and went straight to his grandmother’s bedroom. It is reported that when he arrived, he lit a torch and peeped through the broken windows where his grandmother and another woman were sleeping naked. Sensing someone at the window, his grandmother reportedly woke up and saw him peeping at them.
Overwhelmed by shame, Ncube began shouting that since the police had failed to apprehend him, he was now looking for money to go to South Africa.
While shouting, he also threatened to kill his grandmother and then flee to South Africa to evade arrest. He said if he failed to kill her, he would commit suicide.
Fearing for her life and that he would live true to his threats, his grandmother vacated her bedroom and started sleeping at her eldest son’s homestead. The matter was reported to the police leading to Ncube’s arrest.
Appearing before the same magistrate was Jenfat Manamike (34) charged with murder – for killing a Honda Fit driver. Manamike and an accomplice, Ketai Nhanha already in remand for the same charge, had hired the now deceased Christopher Doma to transport them to Figtree under the pretext that they wanted to perform a ritual.
Allegations are that on 19 June 2024, at around 7pm Manamike connived with Nhanha to hire the now-deceased to transport them to Figtree under the pretext of performing a ritual.
Doma, operating an unregistered transport business using a Honda Fit in Bulawayo, agreed to transport the pair. Upon reaching Emncazini Village in Figtree, they allegedly struck him multiple times on the head with an axe, killing him instantly.
They then dragged his lifeless body to a nearby bushy area and dumped it and went away with his Honda Fit. The stolen Honda Fit was later recovered from Nhanha, who later implicated Manamike, leading to his arrest.
