There are films that are reminiscent of remind you of your past. This is a film which, in my case, hauled me back to the year 1935, when, at age seven, I was introduced to this new artistic and technical achievement, the cinema “the movies”, as they were called in New York,
The price, for children, was 5 cents; with their own special section. And always a matron to look after us. No refreshments or snacks of any kind were available to the patrons.
The well-remembered film featured was “Superman”, from a daily newspaper comic strip. It appeared in what was considered the “working man’s newspaper”, The News, which had an enormous circulation and sold for two cents; five cents on Sundays.
It has been said that if one waits long enough, everything ultimately repeats itself comes back again. And so it has happened with this film about the man of steel, which, in film form, was called “Superman”.
Undoubtedly imagining the criticism to which they would have been subjected, the makers of the film wisely wary of oldsters like me who cling tenaciously to memories of the past have produced a movie which, in its technology is very 21st century. But in its sentiment takes its viewers back at least three-quarters of a century. At the film’s opening we are on the very distant planet Krypton. We watch the boy Cal grow to maturity, attending their schools, living quietly with his parents, having no idea of the future which awaits him.

But, even then, violently savage wars took place and Krypton became uninhabitable in the minds of the most adventurous inhabitants. The planet Earth, the one we currently inhabit, became a target for those seeking a new home. Many of its residents possessed powers unknown to those on Earth.
Cal was one such, and, once on earth he took the name Clark Kent and attempted to blend in, ultimately an impossibility. And so, this most remarkable and recommended film tells the story of a superman landing on Earth and coming to grips with the life which you and I take for granted, knowing no other. Most highly recommended.
