SCORES of people with disabilities joined the elderly for free medical check-ups and medication at the Jairos Jiri Centre in Njuboyenja suburb in the last round of the Brian Samuriwo Foundation health expo on Wednesday.

The beneficiaries of the health expo were drawn from Mzilikazi, Makokoba, Njuboyenga, Thorngroove and Matshobane suburbs among others.

The health expo has for the last four weeks assisted the elderly and people with disabilities across Bulawayo suburbs as a part of efforts to help the less privileged access free medical services.

Area coordinator for the health expo Mr Haback Masvaure said Jairos Jiri Centre was the ideal venue for the event as they wanted people with disabilities to come in their numbers.

“People with disabilities feel at home here at the Jairos Jiri Centre where it was also easier to spread the message about the event using the already existing communication channels at the centre. We are happy that they came in their numbers to access free medical check-ups and medication.

“Young people with disabilities who are also students at Jairos Jiri Centre were also part of the people that were assisted by medical professionals,” said Mr Masvaure.

McLean Thembo (20), a student studying garment construction said he was given diabetes medication.

“I’m originally from Hwange so I depend on my relatives for my diabetes medication, which they send every month. I was given medication that will last another month and I’m grateful for that,” said Mr Thembo.
