AN employee of a leading travel agency is claiming he was robbed of US$78 000 in cash, belonging to his employer, and also lost two cellphones to a group of armed men, on Saturday.
Subhajit Jana (32) of Satguru Travels claims he was preparing to go and deposit the money when two men approached his vehicle.
He claims they opened the doors and sprayed him, and his driver, with pepper spray at the corner of Robert Mugabe Road and Sam Nujoma Street.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, said Jana and his driver were also assaulted and left tied with cables.
“Two men were reported to have approached the complainant’s vehicle, opened the doors and sprayed the complainant and his driver in the eyes with pepper spray.
“One of the accused persons strangled the driver in the neck and stuck a knife on his side while searching him.
“He took his cellphone, and accused number two strangled the complainant’s neck and took a bag containing US$78 000, Samsung A23 and Redmi 105.
“The complainant and his driver were assaulted and tied with cables on their hands and legs.
“They sprayed them again and fled with the money,” said Insp Chakanza.
In another case, Phanuel Dube, 57, of Victoria Falls, lost US$1 400 to three men at the corner Mbuya Nehanda Street and Robert Mugabe Road in Harare.
On Friday at around 8pm, the man and his wife were heading to Queens Hotel.
One of the three accused persons, Kudakwashe Murehwa, was reported to have grabbed the man’s right hand as if he was greeting him.
This gave his accomplices the chance to search his pockets and took US$1 400, national ID card, Steward Bank card, NSSA ID card and driver’s licence.
The accused ran away after the man’s wife shouted for help.
Insp Chakanza said Kudakwashe was arrested and is helping police with investigations.
