Perm Sec warns parents, schools

PERMANENT Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Thumisang Thabela, has warned schools and parents to safeguard the lives of pupils under their care.

She raised her concerns at yesterday’s burial of six Tynwald High School students who were killed in a bus accident on Friday.

“I think for us to understand just how devastating this incident has been to us, as a Ministry, I want us to think of one simple statistic I was looking at as I was sitting here.

“We all know that there was Covid-19 pandemic which destroyed so many lives.

“For the Ministry, with over 4.6 million children, we only lost two children to the pandemic but today, just one second, has given us the loss of six lives.

“We couldn’t do anything about Covid-19, but I stand here to say to us as adults, I think we can do something about incidents like this one.”

She added:

“We thought the days of Regina Coeli were behind us, but we noticed that there are two things we are not getting right as a people, as the sector.

“So, on behalf of the Ministry, I want to acknowledge you my dear parents and pass our sincere condolences.

“This loss of our dear children is a very painful loss to us as the education sector.”
