And anyway, is his Government so dull that it took so many years to discover that it had no right or mandate to brutally punish innocent people going about their rightful business to improve their lot?
But to prove that the man spoke with a forked tongue, he categorically stated he did not foresee a quick repeal of the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act, a law under which illegal sanctions were imposed and for which repeal he should work hard during his tenure in Zimbabwe.
This will validate his claim that the US now realises that it has no business dabbling in Zimbabwe’s internal affairs.
As of now the truth remains that the US and Britain and their cousins in continental Europe still salivate for Zimbabwe’s liver through regime change which for them would mean the elimination of Zanu-PF and President Mugabe as its leader from the politics of this country.
In that regard, the ambassador is not being honest to himself when he says Zimbabweans have the right to choose the leaders they want through an election process without any external influence, because, deep down in the American’s heart, Cde Mugabe should not be among the leaders elected.
The implication in the ambassador’s remarks that his government would accept leaders voted for in the forthcoming elections even if President Mugabe—the West’s nemesis—wins, is that the Americans prefer that he does not get elected at all. That desire is engraved in capital letters on their hearts.
And no Zimbabwean should be bluffed by Ambassador Wharton’s claim that he was warmly welcomed at the just-ended Zanu-PF conference in Gweru where he said he had a fruitful discussion with the party’s senior leadership.
To begin with, those Zanu-PF leaders who received him demonstrated the deep-seated hospitality and humanity of Zimbabweans even towards an enemy’s representative, but certainly do not forgive America’s criminal act against this country, Ambassador Wharton can be sure of that.
And if the talks he had with Zanu-PF were indeed positive, let us now see a practical, reciprocal response from the Americans’ court; otherwise, many Zimbabweans will remain suspicious that the American envoy went to Gweru to try to discover if the party was divided as a sign of weakness, or that he went there to recruit Zanu-PF members to his camp and against their own party and country.
The bottom line here, as called for by representatives of liberation movements at the conference is that the illegal economic embargo against Zimbabwe should go and go yesterday without any conditions.
That message also goes to the European Union whose representative in Zimbabwe has spoken glibly about the removal by the bloc of individuals from a travel ban as part of the sanctions while the elephants themselves remain in the room causing havoc.
The American ambassador also wagged his tongue glibly claiming the sanctions were “targeted” when deep down in his heart he knows full well that punishments so pervasive as to reduce masses of people into skeletal beings due to induced poverty cannot by any stretch of the imagination be said to be targeted against individuals, a few leaders.
This game of semantics, reflecting the heartlessness of Big Brother and his cronies while Zimbabweans endure untold hardships for trying to reassert their birthright should not be allowed to continue under the auspices of dirty politics, or it will invoke the wrath of the God of justice and peace.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed goes the saying which is valid to the greatest extent imaginable.
Today some civil society organisations in Zimbabwe are falling over each other at the altar of mammon, turning themselves over for use as Trojan horses for the enemies of this country. But God is watching and the days of their iniquitous activities cannot remain unnumbered while the people grieve the Prince of peace.
