Prince Godonga Mahlangu, manager for a Bulawayo comic agency has realised this gap and is in a move to close it by embarking on a talent search for female stand-up comedians.
He is also the manager of Ntando “The General” Moyo, one of the country’s comic giants based in the City of Kings and Queens.
Early this month, Mahlangu started a talent search for the country’s future comic queens, with auditions expected to be held in Bulawayo in the first week of next month.
“There is a huge gap in terms of gender balance in the genre of stand-up comedy in Zimbabwe. Men are dominating this field and this makes it monotonous.
“To balance this equation, I have embarked on a talent search for female stand-up comedians in Bulawayo. I started this endeavour at the beginning of this month.
“As such I am looking forward to having auditions in the first week of January next year in preparation for the Valentine’s Day,” said Mahlangu.
He said the emergence of a number of comic queens will create competition and spice up the comic industry as the lovers of it will laugh their lungs out by hearing jokes from the feminine side.
“I believe this is a wonderful opportunity for talented ladies who wish to exhibit their comic antics to grab it and prove to their male counterparts what they are worth. Therefore, I invite all those who are willing to take the comic kings to task to come and showcase their talent,” added Mahlangu.
The genre is dominated by male stand-up comedians such as Clive Chigubhu, Ntando “The General”, and Babongile Sikhonjwa who are based in Bulawayo.
In Harare, there is Michael Kay, Karl Joshua Ncube, Doc Vikela, Comrade Fatso and Simba, The Comic King among others.
