The big launch will feature Alick Macheso, Suluman Chimbetu and Romeo Gasa as guest artistes with support from Chipaz Promotions, Jazz 105, Goldtech Electronics and City Sports Bar.
Fondly called “Young Igwe” by his fans, Peter has finally come out of his shell and there is no need to speculate on his vocal capabilities. Obviously, the Young Igwe’s season is upon us and fans should expect nothing short of a well polished musical project since it took him three years to record.
At 24, the Young Igwe will be making his grand entrance on the mainstream music scene as his own man. He no longer needs handlers leading his way now that he has something up his sleeves.
For some musicians a debut album is enough to guarantee their longevity while others it takes more than just one album to prove their worth.
Whatever the case might be with Young Igwe, the album “Mushonga Mukuru” will be the test to what sort of stuff he is made of. But the general feeling is that he will be treading in his father’s footsteps making sure he fills in the gap.
Interestingly, his group is made up of members almost of the same age and that could be a plus for him since the youngsters exude a lot of energy and verve.
It would be a big disappointment if the album turns out to be sub-standard and below expectations. From the number of live shows and his experience with other seasoned musicians it would be wrong for Young Igwe to sell a dummy to his fans.
By titling the album “Mushonga Mukuru” it appears the Young Igwe is referring to his personal experiences which most people can relate to. The album features former Chibuku Road to Fame winner Romeo Gasa on the track “Mwari Wenyasha”. Peter himself has featured on fellow comrade Tryson Chimbetu’s popular track “Bhora Mberi”.
The latest six-track album, may just be what the doctor ordered if the interest that some of the songs have generated at live shows is anything to go by. With three easily recognisable songs from the late Tongai’s unreleased material, the album could become one of the best sellers at Gramma Records.
The songs “Tutsotso”, “Mira Newako” and “Barika” were already popular tunes at many of Tongai’s shows prior to his passing on. However, Peter also spiced up the tracklist with his own compositions to some of the unfinished tracks by his late father.
Other songs on the tracklist include “Pasirino”, a dedication to the late Dhewa, “Mwari Wenyasha”. Apparently, Macheso did a song of the same name. There is also a track called “Konzi”, whose intro is good enough to rival the popular “Mudzimu Weshiri”.
In his short career as a musician, Peter has done shows in Botswana and also performed alongside Zimbabwe’s best musicians such as superstar Oliver Mtukudzi, Pastor Charamba, Alick Macheso and Suluman Chimbetu.
On his decision to record his album at Gramma Records, Peter said his father had trusted Gramma with his music during his entire career and he believes it is there that they understand his sound better.
At Gramma Records, Peter joins the stable’s biggest-selling artiste, Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria, Gift Amuli, Njerama Boys and gospel royalty Mechanic Manyeruke, to name just a few.
He has also tried his hand at acting, featuring alongside Suluman and Jah Prayzah in local drama series “Bag Rabvaruka”.
