Petrozim Line yesterday commissioned solar-powered and electric powered boreholes at Melfort Secondary School and Bromley Primary School, as part of its corporate social responsibility.
The two schools have been without water for a long time and the intervention by Petrozim Line will ensure there is high level of hygiene at school premises.
Commissioning the boreholes, Engineer Tinashe Mushaikwa of Petrozim Line, said they were targeting schools that were near the fuel pipeline from Mozambique to Msasa in Harare and more schools will benefit as the programme continued.
Petrozim Line is a Government-owned company which is responsible for the availability of petrol and diesel in Zimbabwe and runs the fuel pipeline from Mutare to Harare.
“We are here at Melfort Secondary School commissioning a borehole and this is part of our corporate social responsibility. We are drilling boreholes at schools along our fuel pipeline and this is our fourth borehole so far,” Eng Mushaikwa said.
“There was a need for water at this school. As you can see there is also no electricity so hopefully we will help in connecting the electricity and maybe a perimeter wall.”
Goromonzi district schools inspector Mr Pardon Simango thanked Petrozim Line.
He said the initiative went a long way in improving the learning environment and standards for learners.
The availability of water will enable Bromley and Melfort schools to do agricultural activities.
“The activity by Petrozim will go a long mile in escalating our targets as the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education,” said Mr Simango. “We are mandated to develop manpower, human capital through our education in achievement of the National Development Strategy 1.
“So having water means schools can no longer affected by closures due to Covid 19 pandemic. Water will enable the schools to do commercial projects as we are targeting the commecialisation of institutions.”
Melfort Secondary School headmaster Mr Washington Muchenje said he was happy to have the solar powered borehole.
