‘Pets’ sets new box office record

London – The secret life of “Pets” won the hearts of audience young and old this weekend and set a new box office record in the process. Grabbing a stunning $103,17 million for its first three days, it notched up the biggest opening take ever for an original animated film — and $145,7 million worldwide. That easily beat the $90,4 million made by last year’s “Inside Out”, the previous record holder, according to Just Jared.“Pets”, which featured the voice talents of Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Dana Carvey, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks among many others, also had the widest opening ever for an animated film with 4 370 theatres.

“The Legend Of Tarzan”, starring Alexander Skarsgard as the jungle hero, swung into second place with a second weekend gross of $20,6 million with only a 46 percent drop.

That gives it a total gross of $81,4 million and $135,4 million worldwide, still well below its reported $180 million budget.

“Finding Dory” swam into third place after topping the box office for three weeks. Its $20,3 million weekend takes it to $422,5 million, making it the highest grossing Pixar movie of all time.

The follow up to blockbuster “Finding Nemo” has now grossed $642,8 million around the world.

The all-star cast of voice talents includes Ellen DeGeneres, reprising her role as Dory.

“Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates”, starring Adam DeVine and Zac Efron, nabbed the fourth spot at the box office with a solid $16,6 million debut.

Rounding out the top five was R-rated horror flick “The Purge: Election Year” with an $11,7 million take in its second weekend. It has racked up a domestic total of $58 million and $60,3 million worldwide, a great return on its reported $10 million budget. — www.dailymail.co.uk
