SOUTH Africa-based songstress, Sophia ‘Phia’ Masunda, has been navigating the SA music scene, creating music that transcends language and cultural barriers.
In an interview with H-Metro, Phia said:
“It has been an incredible, eye-opening experience because art isn’t bound to a language or nationality.
“I have had the opportunity to create in studios where no one has an idea what my song is saying, but still embrace it.”
Phia admits that she misses the energy of her home crowd.
“I do miss the occasional ‘studio hype’ when I say a Shona bar but I love it here.
“The diversity, the creativity, it’s all so inspiring.”
As a Zimbabwean artist based in SA, Phia is facing the challenge of finding her footing in a new market but she’s determined to make her mark.
“It’s not always easy but I’m learning to adapt, and I am experimenting with new sounds, collaborating with local artists and pushing myself to create music that resonates with a new audience.”
Recently, Phia released her latest single, “Bvuma.”
