A woman determined to dispel misconceptions surrounding people living with albinism has become a beacon of hope in her community.
She has established an organisation that provides essential resources such as eyeglasses, sunscreen lotions and sanitary wear free of charge every month.
Mrs Matilda Majoni (50) from Zvishavane has dedicated her life to advocating for and supporting individuals with albinism.
In 2019, she founded the For 4 Girls Focus Trust, also known as Mama Majoni, a self-funded initiative based in Mandava, Zvishavane.
It also offers networking forums for individuals to engage and provides medical referrals for eye care.
Her motivation began when she witnessed the challenges and stigma faced by people with albinism in her community.
“There are so many harmful myths about them, and I also had friends living with albinism. I was moved by their struggles and decided to take action,” she said.
She explained that although the organisation’s name might suggest it only supports girls, it welcomes everyone.
“I visit hospitals and talk to mothers who have recently given birth to a child with albinism, offering counselling and education.
“In our society, there is a myth that gods or ancestors are angry when a child with albinism is born, but I counsel them early that this is not true.
“I also follow up to see if parents are hiding their children out of fear of societal mockery and if the children are attending school,” said Mrs Majoni.
Sustaining the organisation has not been easy, as it is self-funded and relies largely on her husband’s salary.
“My husband supports me financially, but his salary is not enough to cover everything from stationery and groceries to sunscreen.
“I also receive most donations from Noble Hands in Bulawayo, and we are truly grateful for their support,” she said.
Despite limited resources, the Trust has transformed many lives.
One success story is that of Miss Rumbidzai Moyo, who won the second princess award at the Mr and Miss Albinism Zimbabwe pageant held in Harare in 2022.
Looking ahead, Mrs Majoni envisions expanding her organisation to many cities beyond Zvishavane over the next five years.
“We are calling for donations and financial aid to ensure the sustainability of our work. With more support, we can expand our reach and make a greater impact,” she said.
