FORMER Hwange Athletics Club pole vault athlete Ishmael Phiri, who died at Hwange Colliery Hospital on Saturday morning aged 46, will be laid to rest in Kwekwe today.
Phiri retired from the sport in 2010 after being part of the popular Hwange Colliery Chamber of Mines athletics team from 2007-2009 and took up welding at the company’s machine shop.
A former colleague Gabriel Chikomo expressed shock at Phiri’s sudden death.
“It’s a shock to learn about the death of a former colleague who also gave a lot to ensure that sport in Hwange became popular as he was passionate about pole vaulting. As former athletes, we are saddened by the loss and pay tribute for what he stood for in athletics,” said Chikomo.
