THREE former Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (Zimura) board members – Dingumuzi Phuti, Alexio “GC” Gwenzi, and First Farai – have retained their posts following elections held during the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Harare on Wednesday.
Joining them on the new board are Gift Amuli, Joseph Garakara, and Dereck Mpofu, who were elected as new members.
The AGM took place at a critical juncture for Zimura, with key discussions centred on royalty distribution, transparency, and the general welfare of artistes, issues that continue to stir debate within Zimbabwe’s music industry.
The newly elected board is expected to spearhead reforms aimed at strengthening the association’s governance and enhancing its advocacy for the rights and fair compensation of music creators across the country.
Zimura remains a key institution tasked with protecting the intellectual property and earnings of composers, writers, and publishers in Zimbabwe’s creative sector.
However, the meeting was marred by moments of chaos as tensions flared among members disputing the organisation’s operational processes. The situation escalated when musician Mudiwa Hood withdrew from the race, citing the controversial use of proxies, a system that many candidates had relied on to secure votes. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mth
