thronged the new retail outlet to sample what the South African retailer had on offer, making the usually quiet Westgate Shopping Centre a hive of activity.
Speaking after the opening of the new Pick n’ Pay outlet, TM Supermarkets — in which South African retailer holds 49 percent stake, managing director Mr Dave Mills said the retailer would focus on local products. The other Pick n’ Pay outlet is in Kamfinsa.
“The supermarket’s focus is on Zimbabwean products that they can get and export to Pick n’ Pay’s retail shops in South Africa,” said Mr Mills.
“We hope that the (Pick ‘n Pay) supermarket will lure more customers to Westgate Shopping Centre since business has been a bit low there,” Mr Mills said.
In a bid to promote local products producers like Alpha & Omega, Dendairy, Baker’s Inn, Schweppes among others showcased their products in the new shop.
The Pick n’ Pay Supermarkets branch rollout follows a partnership between TM Supermarkets and the South African retailer, but the local unit would remain in charge.
Pick n’ Pay would dually brand TM Supermarkets, which is a household name in Zimbabwe.
Mr Mills went on to say that the Westgate Shopping Centre presented a wonderful opportunity for Pick n’ Pay to explore its growth potential in the western suburb.
The Westgate outlet’s hinterland would include Dzivarasekwa, Marlborough, Mabelreign and people coming from Banket, Chinhoyi and Karoi.
Last year Pick n’ Pay acquired an additional 24 percent of Zimbabwe’s operation in TM Supermarkets where it already had 25 percent share, bringing its total shareholding to 49 percent.
