Piped water transforms Mberengwa school, community

DAMBASHOKO Primary School in Mberengwa District, Midlands Province, has emerged as a beacon of rural transformation following the successful installation of a piped water scheme that is positively impacting learners and the surrounding community.

The project, implemented through a public-private partnership between the Government and local business stakeholders, has delivered clean, safe water to the school and nearby households for the first time. It stands as evidence of the Second Republic’s inclusive development agenda, which prioritises equitable growth and improved livelihoods for rural communities.

For years, pupils and villagers in Dambashoko depended on unsafe water sources, often walking long distances to collect water from unprotected wells.

“We now have piped water at the school, and even our parents can access it. We are very grateful because we used to struggle with water shortages,” said Grade Six pupil, Itai Zhou.

A local parent, Mr Antony Mwenda, said the reliable water supply has restored dignity and brought relief to the community.

“In the past, we believed piped water was only for urban areas, but under President Mnangagwa’s leadership, we have seen that everything is possible. We thank our Government for programmes that are truly transforming our rural lives,” he said.

With the new infrastructure in place, Dambashoko Primary School has established a village business unit, including a horticulture garden that supports both agricultural education and income generation.

“The garden will help learners gain practical agricultural skills, while the produce will generate income for school development,” said a school representative.

Local businesspeople, inspired by the national development philosophy “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo”, played a pivotal role in funding and supporting the project.

Ms Jerina Tavengeyi, one of the local entrepreneurs behind the initiative, said the project reflects the spirit of self-reliance and collaboration promoted by the Second Republic.

“Access to tap water improves quality of life. As local miners and businesspeople, we have embraced the national vision by participating in community development. This project ensures better sanitation and hygiene, especially for our children,” she said.

Ms Tavengeyi added that the completion of the water project marks another milestone in the Government’s efforts to achieve rural industrialisation and sustainable development through public–private partnerships.

“The success of this project demonstrates the power of unity and collaboration in addressing community needs. The installation of the piped water scheme has not only improved access to clean water but also brought hope and renewed optimism to our people,” she said.
