Pirate taxi accident kills one

Munyaradzi Doma Midlands Bureau
An accident involving a pirate taxi on Monday afternoon killed one person and injured nine people along the Masvingo-Mbalabala Highway. The pirate taxi, a Toyota Funcargo, which had 10 people on board including the driver, was headed to Zvishavane from Mberengwa, when it veered off the road and overturned several times.

The accident occurred at the 104-kilometre peg. Police identified the deceased as Madhibha Gundugwa (24) of Zvishavane, whose body was taken to Zvishavane District Hospital for post-mortem. The injured were taken to the same hospital, where their condition is reportedly stable.

Witnesses said some of the injured passengers sustained head injuries and bruises. It is alleged that the pirate taxi driver, Telmore Mutiwazuka (23), lost control of his vehicle, resulting in it veering off the road, overturning and landing on its side. Zimbabwe Republic Police national traffic spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome confirmed the accident and urged the travelling public to avoid using pirate taxis.
